october 8, 2018 bulb planting soon time to plant spring bulbs. i leave mine for a while yet while i daydream about being able to pick as many as these tulip-pickers in a 1966 window in spalding by the always excellent harry harvey. my late mother-in-law took us to one of the very last flower/tulips festivals in spalding in the 1980s, just before the lincolnshire bulb business collapsed. i went back years later to see this window which i love because it celebrates the local flower farming business (and potatoes in the other section), and i can imagine that when it was installed, the congregation didn't expect it to become a period piece so quickly. a little like this one by caroline townshend and joan howson (1940) in the small, remote church in sancreed in cornwall. there are many vivid accounts of the impact of the railways on cornish life, one of which was the possibility of getting early spring flowers and vegetables to valuable london markets. a few daffodil growers still flourish in cornwall and on the isles of scilly (cornish anemones are also particularly lovely) so the window is not yet entirely out of date. it all makes me wonder where else you'd find such beautifully designed and made permanent, public tributes to bulb-planters and flower-pickers. that's the glory of stained glass for you. and for spring planting - potatoes in spalding: posted | permalink | comments (5) reblog (0) | october 2, 2018 medical glass when i learned to make stained glass at west dean with sasha ward (highly recommended) the one thing i was concerned about was cutting myself. i have a solid track record with glass and sharp knives, having cut off the end of one finger while slicing chicken breasts (it's a great story, if you have time), having had stitches in another finger after catching a broken glass on the rebound, and having sustained innumerable bloody cuts when chopping and preparing food. thus, i had visions of severed arteries, blood spurting everywhere, stitches, possible fainting, definitely a&e. in the event, i got one tiny nick which produced a minute drop of blood, and that was more to do with sloppy clearing up than dangerous glass-cutting. but i did make sure i knew where the first aid kit was, and that i had a few emergency plasters with me. in this way, a link between medical assistance and stained glass formed even before i found a 1962 window in st mary, wargrave, by john hayward (1929-2007) dedicated to a local doctor and his wife. now, there are many church stained glass windows which commemorate doctors most of which feature st luke the physician, but nowhere else have i seen one which is as wonderfully modern and detailed as this. everything in the window is contemporary: the artistic/illustrative style, the instruments, the uniforms, the wards, the research, the medicines. even the section with laboratory equipment looks like sixties abstract art (and plays nicely with the idea of representing glass with glass) it's primarily a religious window - st luke is, of course, in the other light - but it celebrates the advances of science and medicine and the people involved in them without any of the problems which prevented the victorians with their mix of darwinism and doubt from moving away from purely biblical interpretations. john hayward was a deeply religious man, but he brought the contemporary world into many of his windows. so much so that if i had come round in a pool of blood after cutting off a few fingers, i would have recognised this doctor and been glad to see him. [i wanted very much to include a section on doctors in my book but it was one of the sections, together with vicars, potatoes and domesticity, for which there wasn't room. stained glass contains so much more than most people ever imagine.] posted | permalink | comments (3) reblog (0) | september 24, 2018 landmarks the egyptian house it's over twenty years now since we started having holidays in landmark trust properties. it began when we were living in germany then belgium and found it difficult to squeeze the five of us into grandparents' houses on visits to england (not mention having to apologise for the disturbances in the night). instead, we turned the trips into holidays, becoming tourists in our own country. we would book a lt place knowing that it would be suitable for children (no pale fabrics, no knick-knacks, lots of opportunities for hide-and-seek and playing outside) and for us (no tv, but a corkscrew and lots of relevant books in fantastically interesting buildings and locations) and for family to come and visit and/or stay. we liked the concept so much, we carried with lt holidays when we came back and even though it's just us two now, we haven't stopped. cornish dahlias landmark trust properties force you to think and be local in a way you might not be in everyday, ultra-connected, global life. we find out about traditional tradespeople and suppliers of odds and sods we thought had disappeared. we read in the log book about the dozens of wild flowers/birds/butterflies that previous visitors have found and we realise just how much we generally fail to notice. we make fires, go for muddy walks, wander round nice towns like ludlow or skipton, try local beers, and read local newspapers. for a few days, we happily cut ourselves off from daily life (no wifi or tv or radio) and immerse ourselves in an alternative micro-universe. sancreed stained glass we have just been to penzance to stay in the wildly colourful and decorative egyptian house . we found amazing fishmongers and ate fantastic fish and crab, enjoyed little saffron buns for breakfast and huge pasties for dinner, went to the newlyn and penlee art galleries, saw the patrick heron exhibition (hmmmmm) at tate st ives and revisited the barbara hepworth studio (wonderful) twenty years on, found some stained glass featuring cornish flower pickers, bought cornish flowers, and were surprised by just how interesting a museum devoted to telegraphy could be. we were blown about by strong winds and lashed by rain, and experienced real end-of-the-land cornish weather. zennor and we read. i discovered helen dunmore via the highly atmospheric zennor in darkness and read about the etymology of cornish place names. but the greatest joy was reading a cornish childhood by the historian al rowse which was by turns a fascinating account of cornwall in the early twentieth century and a hilariously egotistic account of his own brilliance. it's an essential part of each holiday to spend time going through the lt handbook, looking back at all the places we have stayed - and planning future breaks. each landmark is associated with a personal landmark discovery, event, book, image or memory, and we are always happy to add to the stock. posted | permalink | comments (4) reblog (0) | september 12, 2018 carry on knitting i adored the carry on films when i was little. their silliness, mild rudeness and pantomimic characters filled many a grey, rainy sunday afternoon when my brother and i were growing up. i was reminded of how much enjoyment they provided when i saw that first liz fraser and now fenella fielding has died. i've been reading the obituaries and looking at the photos, and this is undoubtedly my favourite. of all the unlikely, improbable ways to style a knitting shot, this has to be one of the best. maybe fenella fielding really was a knitter, but she was more frequently photographed holding a glass or cigarette, or wearing unknitterly gloves and looking smokily, teasingly sultry, than with a pair of needles and some yarn. i love the confusion of messages here. fenella who was known for her deep, husky voice and comic roles in saucy films, sitting on a decidedly un-sixties stuffily upholstered chair, in front of delicate, dead butterflies pinned behind glass, wearing a sweet broderie anglaise blouse with high ruffled collar, sporting a ton of lick-and-spit mascara, with a vamp's back-combed, jet-black hair plus gi
